Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |

I'm looking for 5687WB tubes to try in my Audio Note M3 preamp. Beyond stock I've tried a pair of Tung-Sol cryo'ed:http://www.tubeman.com/item218.htm
Fast and light, with great instrumental texture and shadings, great micro and macrodynamic contrasts, very transparent, more defined soundstaging, sounded like someone playing in the room. But too light in the upper bass, lower mids. Not really a "warm" tube. Kind of sounded off and got on my nerves after a while. Too lean. Too hifi'ish?
Now trying a pair of cryo'ed Philips JAN:

Closer to where I started with a warm, full sound (more evenly balanced?). Not as fast and light and I miss some of the detail of the Tung-Sol, but it's more musical, enjoyable in the long term. Better bass and lower mids.
Happy for now, but would like to find a tube to combine the best of both. The cryo thing was an accident; not looking specifically for it.
Any other recommendations?
