V1-V3 are phono
V4-V6 are line levelAll of the tubes, V1-V6, are used when playing vinyl as the phono stage is further amplified by the line stage.
Furthermore:
V1 is the most critical for noise for phono playback, but V2 has just as much impact sonically
V4 is the most critical for noise for CD or other Aux inputs, but V5 also has as much impact sonically. If you are going to be picky about what to buy first, I would try to get the lowest noise and least microphonic tubes for the phono stage V1 and V2. The work on the line stage for at least equal in sound quality, if not the best pics for noise.
Both V3 and V6 are cathode followers for their respective stage and are the least critical sonically.

- Well, sort of. Vs 1, 2, and 3 ARE the fono-stage tubes, and Vs 4, 5, and 6 ARE the line-stage tubes. - jeffreybehr 18:19:26 03/22/06 (0)

- Actually - V4, V5 and V6 are all line - but you have the right idea. (nt) - ruffscruff 19:59:44 03/22/06 (0)
