Re: Fisher - Hot Chassis?

The comments already posted about the "floating" ground are correct. My memory is that there are two ceramic caps, one from each side of the power cord to the chassis. When working properly the chassis will be at 1/2 line voltage regardless of the "polarity" of the power cord. These caps are very small, 0.01 micros as I recall. This does not allow dangerous currents to flow but it can give you bit of a tingle at times.
If one of these caps shorts and it is on the "live" side of the power line it will raise the chassis to full line voltage and allow dangerous currents to flow.

Another problem that can cause this problem is a bad power transformer. I had a Fisher 80T where the primary in the power transformer shorted to the core and raised the chassis to a dangerous voltage. Nobody was injured but the antenna wire caused burn marks on a metal cabinet.
