I haven't measured the pin diameter on my new quad of SED 6550s, but I can report that I noticed no difference in the fit of these tubes in my amp's sockets. These new tubes are just as tight fitting as my older Svetlanas and my 'pre-NATO' EI KT-90s. I'm skeptical of excessive pin diameter variation unless someone can provide measured evidence otherwise. I'd look into tightening your existing sockets or having them replaced. There are many part sources on the web with new production and NOS tube sockets.
