Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Static in Right Speaker

All - thank you for your help. I wend with Bob's recommendation and switched the tubes from the right to the left channel, and I've not heard static again. I'm still a little pissed that the balance knob is centered on the 10 o-clock position and not the 12 o-clock position; but I attribute this to the Chinese Manufacturing, and I doesn't seem to effect the sound (occasionally the right speaker will go low - but then corrects). It died once toward the end of Carmen, but I imagine this is one of the more difficult pieces for reproduction. It sometimes seems that the left is louder. In fact a weird thing about tube listening at night is on lower volumes it seems to get a little louder over time (can it be warming up or something). I've never heard this type of clarity and emotion in my midrange.

Overall, everything seems pretty normal today. I've been trying to read up on the best tube replacements. Having the name Jolida name stamed on the EL34's, makes me think they are probably cheap tubes. One of them has a filament that is raised and glows brighter then the other 3; how is this a matched pair I don't know. I looks like most people loved the Mullards, but are the new ones now being sold on Ebay as good as the original production???

I'd be curious what might be a combination? The Jolida 302B has:

2 matched pairs (4) of 6CA7/EL34 power output; 2 pcs. 12AX7 pre-amplifier; 2 pcs. 12AT7/ECC81 power drivers.

I was assuming that changing out the EL34's would make the greatest diffence; then again I really like the sweet, flowing sound that comes from the tubes. Solid State could NEVER get the resonance of a piano or the richness of a vocals. Also, I've always read about these so called "micro-dynamics", but I am hearing nuances in the music that are real and exciting. Perhaps our hearing only goes to 20KHZ, but to have a full presentation you need the ability to reproduce the full spectrum of sound.

Overall, in my Triangles, the Tubes are allowing the instruments to "play" off the speakers, not just reproduce and sit there. Very cool, I can't imagine it gets better after a burn in period. In three days I've already logged about 20 plus hours of listening, I'm addicted. Glad I found the Asylum.
