Your opinion mirrors my own pertaining to the SED 6L6GC.I ran Valve Art (Shugang sp?) KT66's for about 2000 hrs in my Heathkit W5's before I noticed a rapid drop in transconductance of one in the quad. The other 3 test ok (down 25% from new) but look well used.
I have about 1500 hrs on a quad of SED 6L6GC's (which sound better than the VA KT66's) and have recently tested them. They test exactly the same as they tested new. I would expect these tubes to go at least 3500 hrs, hopefully more.
I own several matched quads of "real" 50's black plate "D" getter, clear top RCA 6L6GC's and find them to be totally lacking in refinement, midrange and they have a harsh top end. They sound great in a buddy's 50's Fender tweed. They suck in my HiFi.
I sure am glad I didn't pay todays $$$ to make this discovery as the RCA's were cheap and plentiful when I bought them through AudioMart all those years ago.
