Re: Hum In One of My Quicksilver KT88 Monos

Since you tried swapping tubes and sound does not go away, I doubt if it is the tubes. AS others have posted most likely it is the capapcitors. The QS uses two large electrolytics, and while the parts Mike uses are very good, electrolytic capacitors actually deteriorate faster when allowed to sit for long periods of time (IIRC, the military dumps their caps after 10 years of shelf life). If you open the bottom cover and inspect the caps, you'll see that there is a plastic plug in the cap. If there is any sign of leakage, or if the plug is protruding above the surface of the cap body, that will be the most likely culprit.
You can also check which cap by pulling out the input tubes, leaving only the KT88's and the rectifier tube, and then turning the amp on. If the hum is still present then the the cap closest to the rectifier is shot. If the hum is gone then the cap closest to the input tubes is out. Remember to turn the amp off when pulling out tubes!
