Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
I have been trying to hopefully safely power up a brandnew set of Quicksilver KT88 Monos that has not been used for around 15 years by introducing voltage slowly using a Variac as some of our AA members suggested in a previous thread. One of the monos has a nasty and loud hum which comes happens as soon as the voltage in the Variac reaches 120 Volts. I have switched each type of tubes from one amp to the other and the hum did not migrate to the other amp. The only other easy thing for me to do which I haven't done is switch speakers to finally pin point that the hum is being cause by a particular amp. When I touch either of the transformers or the chasis of the amp the pitch of the hum changes. It doesn't disappear or becomes softer. The other amp is very quiet.
What do you think is the matter? What do you suggest I do or have a technician look at.
