If you keep your eyes open and don't get caught up in Ebay hysteria, you can find most of the 'valuable' NOS tubes you want for far less than you'd expect. Not long ago I bought a pair of strong Tung Sol 6550s, a pair of 1960's Mullard 12AX7, a pair of Telefunken 'diamond bottom' Ecc83s and a Siemens 'nickel plate' Ecc82 for $100 CDN - around $80 US.For starters, try some good used vintage tubes, like Sylvania or GE, which aren't 'sexy' and therefore command low prices. They'll probably sound better than current tubes and based on their performance you can decide where to go from there.
Remember, tubes are worth only as much as people are willing to pay for them. If people stopped speculating and paying through the nose, we'd all have closets full of treasure.
