You can part with a lung, a liver lobe, and a kidney acquiring NOS tubes with panache. IMO, you should try decent affordable stuff before going "bonkers".The best O/P tubes currently being produced are the EH KT88 and the SED 6550C. When, as, and if EI gets their act together, their KT90 will be back on the table.
The 12AX7s of current production that receive some kudos are the Sovtek (Russia) 12AX7LPS and the Groove Tube (China) 12AX7M. The Russian tube is a "copy" of the Siemens long plate, while the Chinese tube is a "copy" of the Mullard ECC83. Again, if EI straightens up and flies right, their 'X7, which is a "copy" of the TFK smoothplate, will become a viable option.
A good affordable 12AU7 is the RCA 5963.
I think the sound you get will improve noticeably with better, but not outrageously costly, tubes.
