Affordable Electro Harmonix KT88s are good, vintage Tung Sol 6550s are a bit better, but so expensive. Next, try a Mullard 12AX7 or perhaps those GE 5751 black plates. The Mullard early 10M series are best, but pricy.Replace the 12AU7 with either a Brimar 13D5 or better yet Amperex 6085. The 6085 NOS price of $60 US per pair lasts a long time with about double the filament current. Thus, are a reasonable bargain due to its 10000+ hour life. The 6085 plays against the best 6SN7s in my circuits.
BTW- I never find playing with tubes a waste of time.
