Yet the other important 2 way system of the same era, the Dynaco A25 also ran its woofer full range(and an even simpler high pass of a resistor and capacitor in series with the tweeter) and my memory of it is very positive. I recall very smooth reproduction.
Yet I basically agree with you. Most woofers break up badly in the upper mid range. But it seems the A25 woofer has good behavior and perhaps the Advent woofer does too. Henry Kloss was too good a speaker designer.
Plus there is a potential advantage to no crossover on the woofer. The usually crazy load of a crossover is eliminated which can lead to improved dynamic behavior.
