Even nearfield listening . . .

. . . works better in an acoustically dead space. Sidewall reflections may be more delayed compared to the direct output of the speakers, but can still confuse the sound. I have a little tabletop system with a tiny Lepai FM receiver and some Dayton "C-Note" kit speakers I assembled, and the sound improves markedly with some foam pillows set to the outside of the speakers.
