I have them on very heavy stands that are filled with sand and lead shot. I agree that these speakers (and most monitors, if not all) benefit from heavy stands.
I think the comment below about crossover design and implementation is a good one; as best I can tell B&W didn't go to any extremes in the crossover layout of this speaker.
The M805 is fabulous at portraying soft silky lifelike female voices. Violin and similar stringed instruments are portrayed beautifully. What it lacks is the ability of recreate a "thick" soundstage by which I mean orchestras and the kind of sound recorded on Mapleshade's "ARC Choir". Three dimensionality particularly in terms of image height and depth are limited.
I am hesitant to jettison the M805s for a simple reason; I vividly recall the very knowledgeable salesman at Progressive Audio in Columbus, OH, "Robert" (long since gone) who had all of the very best speakers at his disposal and use for his home system telling me something to the affect, "even though I sold my pair [of M805s] long ago, I always come back to them as being so beautiful to listen to that I regret having sold mine". The way he said it burned into my brain the very true concept that "better" does not always equal "more enjoyable". As a crude analogy, a '61 red and white Corvette is not a better vehicle than a modern day Acura TL, but most of us can agree which is the more desirable, enjoyable vehicle.
I'm willing to accept trade-offs. Anyone who listens to stand mounted monitors in a smallish room is accepting a trade-off, inherently. The issue I guess is whether there are other stand mounted monitors that have all of the M805s virtues but also do other important things much better, including all of the very subjective and impossible to quantify "enjoyment factor".
When I bought the M805s, I could easily ask to home demo any of a half dozen similar monitors from ProAc, DyneAudio, etc. That just does not seem to be the case any more. Again, too bad there are no Merlin dealers around here. In fact, sorry to seque, but why are there so few Merlin dealers nationwide?
