I owned and was very fond of a pair of Matrix 805's for several years. I too preferred them to their successors. If you like their sound but want to hear it bettered, I would stick to their sonic relatives: Harbeths, Audio Notes, Reynauds, Quads (the dynamic speakers), and the like. What you will get for your updating, depending on which is the candidate, is more musical information, more refinement, more ease, better dynamics (won't sound quite so small in a large room), better bass, or more expressiveness. Choose your virtues and don't hesitate.
