Have you ever seen what a 4th order crossover does to a sine wave? 2nd order? If you add a different amount of time delay to each and every frequency how can one consider that speaker "Accurate " or "musical"? It would be neither. The waveform was not recorded that way, and was not intended to be reproduced that way. Phase shift is an artifact of speaker physics, a time delay superimposed over the original musical waveform. Nowhere eles in the recording chain or playback chain do you intruce such massive changes in the waveform.
Many designers would not agree with me. I'm well aware of that. How many of them design first order crossovers? It's VERY difficult, and doesn't make for high profits or new models every year. It also requires understanding time domain physics, among the most difficult of all the physics.
Rent a 4th order x-over from a music store, record thru it and you'll be amazed at the difference in sound.
