Yes, they are similar. And yes, the Eroica was a great advance over previous symphonies. Supposedly, it was Beethoven's favorite symphony. It happens to be mine, as well.I must have heard a dozen versions of it and Szell's is among my favorites. Kleiber too, in dim sound. Other greats out there in dim sound.
I'm anxiously awaiting my SACD set of Beethoven Symphonies performed by Haitink and the LSO.
