Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Ignorance is ...... an explanation?

NY State Music Fund imposed fines on radio stations for pay-to-play schemes. It gives $70,000 to Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra to set poetry of Bob Dylan to music and record it.

They get composer John Corigliano to compose the musical work. Now, in case you are not familiar with this composer, he is American, born in 1938. So, during the hippie era of the 60s and 70s, he was in his 20s when Dylan hit stardom. He's best known for his soundtrack for "The Red Violin."

So, get this. Corigliano says he had never even heard any of Dylan's songs until a friend gave him a book of Dylan's lyrics.

Which raises some pretty odd questions in my mind:

Like, how does an American musician in his 20s go through the 60s and 70s (and beyond) without ever hearing a Bob Dylan song?

And, what kind of brain-dead idiocy results in hiring a composer to write music, using poetry of an icon like Dylan, who is completely unfamiliar with the man's poetry and music?

And what kind of mindless bureaucratic system shovels $70,000 at this kind of project? I mean, I know orchestras need all the support they can get these days, but who was the retard who cooked up this whole scenario, and why wasn't the idea laughed off the planet the moment it was uttered?
