I contracted the West Nile Virus a few years ago, and while I'm not sure if it was the virus itself... or the regimen of anti-viral, anti-biotic and anti-fungal drugs they gave me at the hospital (while they were still diagnosing me), I've had mild ringing/whooshing sounds ever since.
It is amazing, though, how the brain can tune out these sounds to a great extent. So there's that!
