Re: Jolida CDP Question

I have owned two of these, no upgrades, but much tube experimentation.

Your question gets, from me, very much a YMMV answer. While these 'upgrades' were popular in their day, the market seems to have moved on to looking for excellent players out of the factory and competitive with the JD in price or just a few bucks more. The Quad CDP-2 and Rega Apollo come to mind right away (there are others), neither of which is tubed (an advantage imho, due to lower ownership cost and no temptation to keep trying tubes. I love tubes, but they have their place, and again imho, cdps are not it).

Some users think the upgrades take away from the basic personality of the stock player, which is bouncy, alive and appealing, if somewhat lacking in resolution. From what I have read (admittedly not the universe of opinion on this) the upgrades make tradeoffs in these areas. At which point the argument devolves to: why not just find a player whose basic personality you like to begin with?

You would lose much less in resale (upgrades are notorious for losing value fast) and not be caught in the position of second-guessing yourself as to whether the upgrade was worth it or not. After all, how many people who upgraded actually kept a stock player on hand for comparison afterwards? Who's to say the changes, real as they may be, are not being *perceived* as beneficial because one spent the money and one *wants* the changes to be good?

Of all the slippery slopes in audio, and there are many, this to me is one of the most so.
