My network of audiophiles has extensive experience with after-market fuses, including Synergistic Research. I myself have used various SR models, in both small and large, slow-blow and fast-blow, and in a multitude of amperage.
With SR, I've used primarily Red, Black, and Orange. When you first install these, don't be surprised, if the audio component's sound actually becomes worse. Don't be surprised, if the sound sucks for a couple weeks. Don't be surprised, if, after a couple of weeks, the sound gets better. Don't be surprised, if, after trying the fuse in both directions, it sounds different.
No, you are not imagining things. You can always verify, by removing the SR fuse, and going back to the OEM.
When guys come over, they want to watch sports. Thus, they need announcers' voices to be clear, to stand out from the rest of the sound. They want to hear the rip of the basketball net, the squeak of sneakers, the thunk of a football hitting the uprights, the crunch of players hitting each other, the varying intensity of the baseball hitting or glancing off of the bat, the scraping of hockey skates on the ice. Does the audio product, including the fuse, preserve these vital sounds? Or does the product ruin, muddy, or destroy these sounds?
When kids come over, they like to play video games. If the sound is crisp, detailed, enveloping, expertly-timed, and punchy, the video gaming experience is intense and addictive. Again, does the insertion of the fuse enhance or cripple the sound?
Everyone is now a middle-aged mom. Whether they are in the kitchen, lounging on the couch, lying on the floor, or sitting off to the side, the moms like music. The moms can't dance, but still love dance music. So is the sound good enough, that the moms let go, and start their gyrations, snaps, hip sways, and arm raising? And then, do the daughters step in, and show everyone how to execute the dance moves: the hand on hip, the waterfall finger shower, the running man, the hand rolls, the steps and kicks, the brief pause, the flick of hair, the photo finish pose.
My Simaudio 600i has enough innate resolution, that, if the sources are of sufficient quality, you can easily hear the differences between the SR Red and Orange. The moms can be brutally honest. After hearing both fuses, some of the moms thought that the SR Red (new or well-used) sucked, didn't like how it made the music glossy, with not enough contrast and punch.
