My friends and I have lived with various Simaudio gear since the early 2000s. In general, as you move up their lines, the products become more resolving. Thus, things like after-market fuses become more noticeable.
Some audiophiles do not hear any sonic differences, when replacing fuses. And that's fine. Some audiophiles hear differences. But then, they try the fuse in both directions, and do not hear any differences. And that's fine, too.
If you do hear differences, you then have the task of determining whether said differences are positive, negative, or a bunch of trade-offs.
When I have visitors (none is an audiophile), they will hear or even "sense" that the sound changes, whenever a different fuse is inserted. Then it boils down to personal preference. Just as each mom can be rather animated and adamant about which boba she likes best, each mom may have a strong preference for one fuse over another.
If you want to experiment with after-market fuses, before trying various AES/EBU cables, there's nothing wrong with that.
