I would definitely scour the used market, try before buying, and then stick everything on an audiodharma Cable Cooker.
With our Simaudio digital gear, AES/EBU cables don't have to be expensive. We've long liked XLO's original Reference Type 4B. I'm not sure if I have any spares left. For the US$500 budget, you might be able to find used Kimber Orchid samples. You'd have to stretch that budget, in order to find the Cardas Clear AES/EBU.
And don't forget that Simaudio gear reacts to after-market fuses.
