I just don't get power cables

I'm in the process of rolling my own power cables just in case they make a difference. Using fancy plugs, shielded cable and will be installing a Furman power conditioner shortly. Will it make a difference in anything? Maybe, maybe not, but I don't see how any of that can hurt.

Anyway, here's my question: how can any of it be any better than the 50' (or whatever) of romex sitting in the wall between the outlet and breaker box? The only idea that makes any sens to me is that the power conditioner is improving the line and improved cables are preventing degradation from RF, transients, sunspots, phlogiston, tachyon misalignments etc between the conditioner and the component. But is there any real theory of what's going on? Regardless, I will be listening eagerly for some kind of improvements... Thanks and cheers,
