start simple -- dirty controls?

Lots of knobs, buttons, and switches to have dirty contacts. Any one (or more) could be the culprit.

See, e.g., link below on how to clean contacts. CAIG's DeOxit is very good, although 1) it can remove the smooth "feel" of some controls, and 2) it is sometimes reported to damage certain types of controls (e.g., plastic film potentiometers). CAIG also has a product (which I think is still called FaderLube) to restore the "feel". It may also be the better choice to clean some controls (e.g., slide controls, known also as faders).
