Press is one thing, actuality another. Sansui's integrateds and separates were made to a much higher standard than their receivers, and sound like it. Most brands' receivers are their integrateds with a tuner section added; but not Sansui. This is borne out by listening and examination.
Pioneer's receivers were generally more like their integrateds with an added tuner section.
IMHO, the SX-1250 is the best-sounding receiver Pioneer made. First rate tuner, surprisingly good 160 wpc power amp, and an average preamp section. But since the receiver has preamp outputs/power amp inputs, a better preamp can be used with the SX-1250's tuner and power amp sections to very good effect.
I realize that you are reporting on your impression of "press', not of the brands' quality directly.
I think the most consistent brand for quality was Marantz, but again, it depends on the model. In general (IMHO) sound quality generally goes down as power goes up in the 1970s Marantz lines.
