I used to have an Empire 598 and I loved that TT, it worked flawlessly (weak link tonearm). I sold it and bought a Micro Seiki and I sold that one which was also a mistake. I sometimes do stupid things.
I personally like the simpler ones for reliability and fix factor. That usually means the VPI's and some others. I still have an older VPI and you really only have to rely on the belt life for periodic maintenance/replacement. The servo locked tables use IC chips that may one day not be available and then you would have to hunt down a used table and hope the parts would be sufficient for repair. There is risk in that because voltage spikes on the AC line can take it out in a split second.
However, if I were to buy a table today it would be new, well liked, and easy to set up with a tonearm already mounted and just about ready to play after a thorough setup. The spinners over at the vinyl forum seem well pleased with the VPI traveler, try asking over there. There is still great pleasure today in spinning records despite the alternatives.
