Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Re: One of Joe Rosen's favorites (actually two of them)

You know, I'm sitting here wondering just what kind of buzzing? Through the speakers, from the amp itself, or both?

Also, did any of those repair guys give any cause for the problem? And, if they declared the problem solved, or found no problem, how long did they test it before or after the repair?

A tube amp buzzing or humming can be caused by a lot of things, some of them simple. Did they swap tubes? or try checking for bad grounds with jumpers? clean the tube sockets? wiggle each tube in the socket while it was playing, and listening for noise? make sure any sensitive high-gain tubes that should have been shielded actually had their shields in place? check to make sure the screws that hold the transformers down were tight?

Did they ask if you had tried another amp in the same setup? Hmmm, just looked up a photo of one, looks like the transformers are riveted down. BUT, those RCA jacks, yuck! Did they check those? I just had to replace a set of bad RCA jacks on an old HK A-300 amp, they were so bad you could get all kinds of interesting noises that varied by which direction you touched the interconnect's plug.

Tube gear is very sensitive to variations in resistance, and grounding issues. Even a simple dirty connection in an un-obvious place will drive you nuts until you find it. You have to be patient, or find someone that's willing to be patient, when working on tube equipment. The repair bill may be high, but on those crazy problems, the bill probably doesn't cover the real amount of time spent diagnosing and fixing a problem (like the time I spent "machining" a new fan and fan motor to fit the old housing in an old Moscode 600 recently. It looked easy enough at first, but a total of 6 hours with a Dremel tool later . . .).

(and NO, we didn't charge for all the time on the fan, not even close, just the normal 15 minutes or so it SHOULD have taken to swap that cursed fan! But, it was QUIET when I was done. Good-sounding amp too.)
