Yes, my expander is a 1BX model which does its "thing" across the whole audio spectrum. My justification for "introducing distortion" is to try to undo the distortion introduced by the FM radio stations.The proof of the pudding will come when I'm able to listen to FM broadcasts of certain Beethoven piano sonatas for which I have vinyl recordings by Ivan Moravec (e.g., Appassionata, Pathetique, etc). During the quiet passages, you're almost straining to hear every detail; the louder passages almost knock your socks off. It'll be interesting to hear how close I can come to that with FM broadcasts played through my expander.
But even with my testing so far, the musical dynamics are definitely improved.
I would like to build a DIY expander, for sure.
