My first seperate tuner was a kit also: Heathkit 1214. Lovely sounding. I recall onetime in the 70s one of my roommates performed with her chorale group for a boston FM station broadcast.
I recorded the performance through the 1214 onto an RT-707 reel to reel.
She - and her group - could not believe how great it sounded when I played it for them, and of course I gave them the tape...
