I share your sonic experience with a PROPERLY built passive control, on power amps, SS & tubes, including ST-70.

Make sure really good pots are used as the pot wiper tends to generate noise voltage on turning in the order of 1-2mV per signal volt applied across the pot for the speed of one wiper rotation/sec.

That's why use stepped attentuators are better to eliminate such rotation noise, to say the least. Of course, they will cost more.
