Arthur,Yes, the MAT-02 are indeed NPN transistors. The SSM2210, which I plan to use, is a matched NPN pair in an 8-pin DIP with slightly higher noise than the MAT-02.
Allen now apparently prefers the bipolar input devices for both high and low output cartridges. According to the RTP3C schematic on his website the FET and NPN devices are pretty well interchangeable in this location.
