Re: Some numbers....

(Chiming in..)

I could be mistaken, but IIRC all of the 1N400X series diodes are rated for 1A continuous, not 2.5A. These are the cheap, reliable workhorses of rectification, costing around $0.10/ea in quantity.

HexFred diodes are more expensive than 1N400X series for sure, but have you checked the prices recently? 8A 600V units are around $0.75/ea in quantity - a tiny price, compared to the fancy capacitors and so forth in the rest of the circuit. Also, heatsinking is only required if they are handling serious currents. The few mA used in most tube designs doesn't create much heat. HexFreds have most all the (sonic) advantages of vacuum diodes, with none of their drawbacks (as far as I can tell).

While most solid-state diodes have a fairly constant forward voltage drop (typically 0.7-1.2V, depending on load) vacuum diodes are another matter. Vacuum diodes have a unique characteristic, known as *purveyance*. This characteristic causes the vacuum diode to vary its internal impedance - not only in relation to current drawn, but to supply voltage as well. Take a look at a 5U4 datasheet, and you'll see that the Rp rises in a non-linear fashion along with voltage and current.
