I find that even in mono there's some sense of soundstage. Obviously you don't get the left-right placement, but there's still a sense of the artist being there in the room with you or not. It seems that this is an important part of what we perceive as soundstage. Even a crappy old SS receiver can place the artists reliably left-right - and if everything is placed well, the speakers can seemingly disappear - yet the sound is still one dimensional. Meanwhile, mono done well can have some sense of three dimensionality.I agree that some people obsess on this, but I do think without it the listening experience suffers, at least for me.
