Based of what you say about grid leak resistors

and what I have heard, I'd encourage you to give them a try. I do think the grid of the output tubes is the right place to use them. Between the rising gain at higher hertz due to it's inductance and the fact that a resonant hertz can be dialed in on the low end through coupling caps size it can allow you to get an overall flatter response without feedback. It takes some trial and error but I think you will be very pleased with the sonic results.
