tubesforever,I hope my post didn't sound like I'm a mother hen, and I don't want to discourge anyone working with tubes.
I have been injured many times by white-hot sparks due to my own carelessness. I'm sure you have received a piece of dust in your eye that feels as if your eye has a dagger in it! With careful cleansing and your own tears, the pain will go away.
In 1978, I was building a high voltage supply (2kV @ 1.5A). I was having problems with the power supply, some sort of oscillation occured at a certain current level. I was bone-tired, and at the end of the day, my good judgement wasn't working. I switched off the power supply, but I was in a hurry to go to bed. I used a test probe wire with copper alligator clips to short the power supply. I heard what sounded like a 0.22 caliper rifle shot, and a blinding blue flash, followed by the worst pain in my life!!! A piece of white-hot copper landed in my right eye. Fortunately, I was not blinded.
My advice is this: Don't work with high voltage when you are tired, angry, and upset. Don't let your hobby kill you.
Regards,
Mike
