Re: A lot of ways to skin a cat

Yeah, that's the "sound of power supply" talk that I hate.:)

I'm teasing you there, but you are responding, justifiably, to me teasing Michael, as well. I thank you for your reply and agree with most of what you say, to the extent that I am able, but I would assert that when I talk about power supplies for amps and when you talk about power supplies for amps, we are talking about apples and clearly different and distinquishable apples.

The Dynaco ST-70 was a class AB1 PP amp built for maximum value at a price. The amps that you are talking about are class A1 or A2 SET amps, where the power supply control is always part of the fidelity of the amp. Regulation of voltage and current is mandatory so that the power transformer noise, the diode switching noise, the ripple are all isolated from the output of the supply. Also, only by implimenting a stiff, low impedance supply can you ensure that the input signal is pushed through the output transformer and not back into the power supply.

With the Dynaco ST-70.......just running is usually pretty good. But the amp you are talking about would be a Dynaco and a half; a ST-105, if you will. You can talk to David Hafler about that, but you are on your own on that one.
