I can't comment on Hg rectifier sonics. I'd avoid Hg rectifiers, no matter how good they sound. Sooner or later, an envelope will break. When that happens, you have a TOXIC waste disposal problem to deal with. If you are determined to use Hg rectifiers, be sure to keep either powdered Zinc or powdered Sulfur on hand. Either of those powders will sequester Hg that has gotten loose from a broken "bottle".You indicated that the damper diodes you tried sounded not so good. Try a pair of 6AU4s.
