Every component in a power supply effects sonics. Power supply design is critical. Large value capacitors are not the best in some locations. Use a PS simulator to see the peak to average currents in transformers, chokes, rectifiers, etc. I design power supplies differently for preamps, PP amps & SET amps. The SET power amp is most critical & PP more forgiving with regard to energy storage.A Chatham 'potato masher' 5R4 was not a good sounding tube. It was 1/2 way in-between a common 5U4 vs the best 5R4.
Try the Sylvania 5R4GYB as mentioned above. Radio Daze at (585) 742-2020 sells these for $10.50 each. Don't like them, I will buy them from you as I only have four spares.
