I think I see the point. Having read the responses with interest (thanks, everyone), my thinking on this has become clearer - or, at least, different.The problem seems to be that, if the "passive" tube is a triode, its plate current will be modulated by its varying plate voltage. This varies because of the "active" tube sharing the same center-tapped primary winding. If the passive tube were a pentode (not UL), then its plate current would be governed by its unvarying screen voltage and relatively unaffected by the varying plate voltage, so it would act more like a CCS. Agreed?
