It may be possible to find an amp that is kind to poor recordings. For myself, I just do not listen to poor recordings as a neutral & accurate tube amp simply passes the poor sonics to the speakers.Perhaps an aftermarket DAC can perform better with poor recordings on CD. I am trying to research this now, but have no answeres from a few sites including this site (digital).
As for FM reception, if one has a quality station & high quality FM tuner, the sonics can be good even with a commercial satelite download provider (not XM). To achieve this, a modified tube type tuner such as my EICO 2200 Classic does outperform many CDs on my system. I also suspect no one would believe this statement.
To view what is necessary in one example of a high quality FM tuner, go to the reviews section at AA & view my EICO tuner. A quality tuner requires tube rolling just like a tube amplifier for best sonics. The poor designs with ceramic caps in the audio chain will mask upgrades, thus the audio caps must be replaced as well. The only upgrade since the review is an Amperex 6085 replacing the 12AU7 audio tube. A Brimer 12AU7 is simular in ultra high quality performance. )I used to use a Sylvania 6SN7WGT to 12AU7 socket adapter). I can also state after a few tube type FM tuners I modified for best sonics, the EICO was shockingly superior. Although quite rare, one is for sale on eBay right now.
