Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

First find the schematic and bridge the chokes and find out their inductance..

...you've already measured the series resistance and if it's 40 ohms it's OK; just depends on the inductance. Would be nice to have at least 10 Henries! If you don't have an inductance meter they are relatively cheap on ebay. You can get one that measures capacitance and inductance. I have the Wavetek Meterman that measures everything. Or some vocational technical school might measure them for you. Are the two chokes of the same value or is one a smoothing choke and the other a swinging choke? They are probably the same type and it was a M derived pi filter with three capacitors. But without seeing the schematic it's just a guess. Just depends on what power you expect out of your built amp. I would design along the same similar lines as Hammond did. No, I wouldn't build for excess! The lower HV winding is probably for the preamplifier/oscillator stages and the higher-high voltage for the power amplifier. With the 5AR4 I would suggest that the first capacitor be oil and not be larger than 6 ufd if you choose a cap input filter. You could even regulate the lower preamp power supply with a 3 tube regulator. Ray
