Well...I built several amps around the A431's, and rolled a few output TX's. The 1650R's always sounded better. It wasn't what I expected, given the competition. IIRC there were 4 or 5 amp circuits, and that many comparable outputs; TO-330, the UL-II's among them.I could build an amp around the 431, and the 1650R incarnation was always better. A 30W EL34 amp was -1 dB at ~50k cps with the Hammond( at power), and with the 431, it was looking poorly long before that running a resistive load on the bench.
I also tried testing with un-compensated loop NFB. In the same circuit I could *ALWAYS* get more NFB before instability set in with the Hammond output. It isn't a really decent test, but as means of comparing, it was acceptable.
