In the broad sense, art is the skilled application of knowledge to achieve an aesthetic result. By that definition, audio engineering is art.I prefer a narrower definition, which is the definition of fine art: the communication of emotional ideas from artist to audience through an aesthetic medium. By this definition, music composition is art, but audio engineering is not.
Performing art, arguably, lies in the middle ground. The performer is a key participant in the expression of the art, but is not the main source of the emotional content.
I think there is a lot of confusion here, largely in part because people don't think carefully about where the art comes from. They decide, consciously or not, that their activities as equipment designers qualify them as participants in the act of artistic creation. I disagree strongly with that.
To be a good equipment designer, arguably, you have to be a skilled listener. A good listener needs artistic sensibility, but not artistic ability.
In short, an audio designer does not need the guidance of an artist. He needs knowledge of electronics, decent ears, and artistic sensibility.
Finally, in my opinion, anyone who wants to complain about the quality of the US educational system needs to learn the difference between "its" and "it's", darn it.
