CCS and drop voltage vs. good sound.

I have a 10m45s as a CCS plate load on a 6sn7 preamp tube. I had 21 volts across the CCS. When I increased the supply voltage by 30 volts (so now I have 51 volts across the CCS) the sound got much better.

I have searched the archives and most posts on the subject say 10 volts is all that's needed to make these things work "right".

Then I found this, it's not a post about the 10m45s specifically but it squares with my expereince.

"It is really quite simple. The battery biased CCS has an absolute minimum voltage of around 10 volts. It is really happier with 20 volts or more across it........

.......I usually go over board on the supply voltage. Good bragging rights to have a line stage that can to 200 volts p-p without straining!"

Comments?
