The Russian 6p14p is an electrical equivalent of the 6BQ5/EL84 and it is not particularly good sounding. OTOH, the Russian 6p14p-ev/EL84M is an electrical equivalent of the 7189 and it's quite decent sounding. JJ EL84s are another good sounding option.Wade thru the "El Cheapo" project thread. The 12AT7 differential splitter/driver is used there. The 'BQ5 is easier to drive than the 'AQ5 used in "El Cheapo"; so, you have plenty of gain.
