Just turned 40...started out at 37.
The way it started out for me was a roadside find of a Dynaco ST-70, Pas-3, and tuner. I got them working with basically zero know-how and the folks on the DD forum. Unfortunately my taste for money exceeded my taste for tube driven sound at the time and I Ebayed them
off to the highest bidder. A little later came a garage sale find of some McIntosh stuff, again... sold. Then I found an Audioprism Debut II at a Goodwill store for $29.99. I thought maybe the man upstairs was trying to tell me something, so I went a bought tubes for it at a guitar shop. I had a listen and I was hooked. That was a very good amplifier. I later sold it on Ebay for $1500 and bought a Dynaco 70 and a Pas-3. A bit later I scored a tube caddy off Ebay that was literally a treasure chest of 300+ audio tubes, including Tung-Sol 6550's (16) nos flat black plate types and all sorts of amazing things. I now own 3 Stereo 70's all modded, 1 original that I used all the best parts on. 3 PAS 3's. One Magnavox amp which I modified according to Russ57's suggestions and rebuilt onto a new chassis. I have been very lucky finding vintage audio equipment and tubes and my collection is to large to fully describe...it might be considered a sickness by those that know me...
I have recently begun my first real DIY, which is from Pete Millett's site. A pair of 6B4g monblocks. I have the tubes and all the parts and begin the chassis cutiing next weekend. It's about all I think about, and I have so little time for it. I check in here every day and some other sites too. I read books (grasp little,) I sell tubes and equipment on Ebay to support the hobby. But what I live for is the few minutes a day that I can switch on my all tube system and sit back, and just listen..."I KNOW you can hear it, but are you REALLY listening?"
