IIRC there are two alternatives for the mps a92 (my apologies as I am writing without checking my sources so the numbers may be a little off). There is an mpsa w92, higher current model of the a 92. Same case and pinouts, just a longer body.
Then there is an mps u 10 or u60, different case style with a metal tab, that can also handle more current.
The 40 watt iron should have been OK, try a larger tip next time. If you really enjoy this kind of tweaking, an investment in a temperature controlled iron is well worth the expense. Ebay has a lot, BTW.Stu
