I use the conical rubber bushings found in plumbing depts. (for faucets i think). Works great.Removing the side hole would ruin the looks for future use, but if you must, try lightly knocking with a punch or screwdriver and hammer, so that it rotates around the small weld spot. Then you can continue with pliers until the weld spot yields.
