a fresh D cell typically runs greater than 1.55V and varies from batches to batches, freshness, etc. so there's no consensus on that.I would insists in finding/borrowing a reference source or an extremely accurate/lab grade VOM or power supply and use that to calibrate against my DVM/analogue meters.
